Question

Hi!

I am a starting photographer & creative director.

I have a photo shoot coming up that was requested by a client. They would like to wear large pieces of jewellery that look good in photos. I see it as an investment for next shoots to have a few nice pieces of jewellery in stock that I can use to take the photos to a new level.

Is this something that can be claimed as a business expense? What about vAT?

Thank you!

Hello,

Yes, I think so... If they are really accessories for photo shoots, you will also be able to provide proof, as they will be in the photos :)

I do wonder whether you need to buy that jewellery for that one photo shoot, but as you yourself point out...

It might be useful to have them in stock for next shoots.

I'm no accountant, of course, but I would think that they can simply be included in your expenses and you can reclaim the vAT. If you are only going to use them for professional use, i.e. for shoots, then I don't see the problem.

I think that's a bit risky :p Anyway, if you use them 100% for professional use, in other words specifically for the shoots, then I think that's fine...

But it will still be important to convince an inspector that you (or your partner, of course) have not worn the jewellery at least as much in your private life.

Because it's jewellery, it lends itself to a lot of private use... But if that's not the case (which is actually difficult to prove), then it can be 100% included in your accounts!

Thank you!

I would ask for a few pounds on my quotations/invoices for general use of personal clothing and jewellery. Since I often provide a lot of the equipment myself, I don't think this will normally be a problem.

Thank you for your input x
