Frequently asked questions about Dexxter
How much personal income tax will I pay this year as a self-employed person?
The ‘Personal income tax’ overview in Dexxter shows a live estimate of what you’ll owe this tax year, based on your current invoices, costs, and social contributions. This way you know how much to set aside before the tax assessment arrives, no more surprises in June or July.
How do I fill in my personal income tax return as a self-employed person? Which codes and amounts from my bookkeeping should I use?
Dexxter automatically generates a step-by-step plan for your personal income tax return (Tax-on-Web): you get the exact amount and tax code to enter for each box, based on your bookkeeping. This way you’re sure that social contributions, professional income, depreciation, and car costs end up in the right box, without having to dig through the tax code yourself.
How do I correctly book my social contributions (Acerta / Liantis / Xerius)?
In Dexxter, you book social contributions under Expenses > Costs, like any other cost. You only need to enter your paid quarterly contribution, Dexxter automatically links it to the correct tax code in your personal income tax return.
Which VAT rate should I charge (6%, 12%, or 21%)?
In Belgium, 21% is the standard rate. 6% applies to, among others, renovation of homes older than 10 years, food, and books. 12% applies to, among others, hospitality meals and social housing. The correct rate depends on the nature of the goods or service, not your profession. In Dexxter, you set the rate per invoice line.
What is the reverse charge mechanism, and when do I apply it?
Reverse charge means that it’s not you, as the seller, but your VAT-registered client who must declare and pay the VAT. It’s mandatory in, among others, the construction sector between VAT-registered businesses. On your invoice, you then state 0% VAT with a specific notice. Dexxter automatically applies the correct notice and the correct VAT box when you enter a reverse-charge client or supplier.
What if I’m owed VAT or have a credit?
If you’ve paid more VAT on purchases in a quarter than you received on sales, you have a VAT credit. You can either carry it forward to the next quarter or request an actual refund. Dexxter automatically calculates your balance and shows, per return, whether you owe or are owed money. You can also check this later via the MyMinfin website, through your provision account there.
Am I VAT-exempt as a small business, and what does that mean?
If your annual turnover stays under 25,000 euros (excl. VAT), you can opt for the small business exemption scheme (art. 56bis VAT Code). You then charge no VAT on your invoices, but you also can’t recover VAT on purchases, and you have no periodic VAT return. You do remain required to submit an annual client listing via Intervat to report your turnover. You enter your VAT status in Dexxter, and it automatically applies the correct regime, invoice notice (art. 56bis), and filing flow.
How and when do I submit my VAT return?
VAT-liable self-employed individuals submit their periodic VAT return via Intervat. Quarterly filers do so by the 25th of the month following the quarter (25 April, 25 July, 25 October, 25 January). Monthly filers do so by the 20th of the following month. With Dexxter, the return is calculated automatically based on your sales and purchase invoices, and you can submit it with one click directly through the Intervat link, no more XML export and upload.
Do I always have to charge VAT?
Not always. If you remain below the annual turnover threshold of €25,000, you may be exempted from VAT. Dexxter adapts to your VAT status.
What happens if I’m late with my VAT return?
If you are late with your VAT return, you will be fined. The fine can increase depending on how often you are late. Dexxter helps you avoid this by notifying you in time.
How much VAT do I need to set aside?
Dexxter continuously calculates how much VAT is charged on your income and how much VAT you can deduct from your expenses. This means you always know how much you need to set aside for your VAT return.
Know how much you really earn. Without stress.

“Very satisfied with this application. The reminders they send for tax deadlines are particularly useful. They also have videos that explain everything concisely and clearly, which is super convenient! Definitely recommended.”
