You are self-employed in a secondary occupation and want to build up your pension? No problem! 🙌 There are various options for adding to your supplementary pension as a self-employed person in a secondary occupation. From tax-advantaged savings formulas to smart investments. Below, we discuss everything you need to know to secure your financial future.
Pension and self-employed in a secondary occupation 🔎
As a self-employed person in a secondary occupation, you build up your statutory pension mainly through your salaried work. This is because the social contributions you pay as a self-employed person in a secondary occupation do not contribute to your pension accrual. Only when these contributions are equivalent to those of a self-employed person in main occupation, your pension also grows via your secondary occupation (minimum €890.51 per quarter, in 2024).
But as a self-employed person in a secondary occupation, your pension accrual is primarily via your status as an employee. Only in the exceptional case where your social contributions are as high as those of a main profession, is there any additional pension accrual.
Can you build up a supplementary pension through your secondary occupation?
Only if your social contributions are at the same level as those of a main profession. It is also only then that you can use additional tools such as a PSPS.
In general, your social contributions as a secondary professional are more like solidarity contributions. You do not build up any extra rights.
This is precisely why it is crucial to effectively keep track of all professional expenses in your secondary profession and process them in your accounts! More expenses, means less profit. That then obviously means less social contributions to pay.
