Claiming make-up as an expense

Question

Hi,

I have a question regarding whether make-up can be claimed as a professional expense? As in, a well-groomed appearance, given that I work with companies and professionals. I’m guessing not, but maybe someone here has experience with this?

Anouck

Hi Anouck,

I acknowledge your reasoning, but unfortunately your daily make-up is not specifically enough to be considered a professional expense by the tax authorities.

You can apply the same reasoning from professional clothing, where clothing that can also be worn at the weekend (e.g. black trousers, a white blouse and a cardigan) is not a tax-deductible expense. Not even if you have a more casual style outside of work and only wear this clothing at work. Clothing specifically designed for tax deductions, such as a chef's hat, a safety helmet, a judge's robe, and everywhere with your brand name on them, are tax-deductible.

A clown who paints his face before every performance will be able to claim his make-up, for example. More general make-up will not be accepted.
