Training: investment or expense?

Question

Hello everyone,

This year, I took a course to become a Pilates instructor. I now teach as a secondary occupation. It was quite an expensive course, so my question is: is this an investment that can be written off over several years, or is it simply an expense?

Thanks in advance!

Evy

Hello, Evy!Were you already enabled as a sports instructor? Because that's the question the tax authorities will ask. Training courses are only considered professional if they are directly related to your current self-employed activity. So was it to broaden your current activity? Were you already a yoga or sports coach and wanted to expand into Pilates? Or not? And did you first do this training course and then become a Pilates instructor?

I hope my explanation is clear. ;)

Kind regards,

Hanne

Hi Hanne! I wasn't a teacher yet, nor was I self-employed. A few months before completing my training, I registered as a self-employed person in a secondary occupation and started teaching Pilates classes. I suspect that this is a very clear link to my self-employed activity. Is this an expense or a depreciation? </

Hey Evy,

I'm afraid so. I studied psychology myself and couldn't claim my education as an expense either. I acknowledge it, it feels a bit unfair, but that's how the tax authorities see it, I'm afraid.

But of course you can always try, bearing in mind the risks of getting caught. In that case, I believe it would be an investment, given the high cost and the long term that you will 'benefit' from here.

Good luck! :)

Hanne
