Question

I am considering applying for a refund from the SME portfolio for the therapy training course, which costs 2,500 euro per year. However, I am concerned that this will make the accounting more complex and that my total income will exceed the limit of 7,000 euro net per year, causing my parents to lose their child benefit. What can I best do?

Hello,

It certainly won't make your bookkeeping any more complex, which is good meegenomen :)

The threshold of €7,021.28 is the threshold from which you have to pay social security contributions as a self-employed student. If your profits exceed this amount, you will have to pay social security contributions, but only on the amount above this threshold! It is important to note that only as a self-employed student will you pay social security contributions on the amount above this threshold; in other words, the exemption for the first €7,021.28 remains in place. (The situation is different for people with a secondary occupation, which is why here, this applies specifically to student entrepreneurs). If this is the case, the government will consider you to be self-employed in your main occupation, with all the consequences that entails. You can find this information in our social security contributions module by clicking on the info icon next to 'limit for remaining a self-employed student'.

We hope this helps!

Kind regards
