Self-employed in secondary occupation/sole proprietor: take a break or stop

Question

From next year, I would like to stop my self-employed activities (for the time being), which is why I am asking this question. If I close my “company”, the consequences are more or less clear (there are already articles in the learning environment). Taking a break is more interesting to me at the moment because I have no costs in this case and if I want to start up again, I will have start-up costs, etc. If I stop for the time being, I assume that I will not have to pay social security contributions, but I will have to continue to file my personal income tax return until I actually close my business (+1 year, of course). Is there anything else I need to take into account? Are there any other consequences? What do I need to pay attention to? What about the accounts if I have no income & expenses?

Empty accounts are fine, no problem there. That is not strange or suspicious in itself.

Just be aware that you still have a few fixed costs yearly, such as provincial and municipal taxes. That is 100 euro per year each, even if you do nothing.

Now I'm confused. I thought these taxes were calculated in my personal income tax. Do they also have something to do with self-employment? In my tax assessment notices from previous years (when I was not yet self-employed in secondary occupation), I also see calculations for federal tax, regional tax and municipal tax. Can you give me an explanation here?

What exactly do you mean by 'you'? I'm just a user like you :à

Every year, you simply receive a number of fixed invoices from, for example, your province or city: if you are self-employed (even if you are not currently working), you will have to pay a small amount yearly. This is separate from your tax return; it has nothing to do with it. It is a yearly invoice from your city and one from your province.

By 'you', I don't mean anything in particular; I think I wrote it automatically. I have never received an invoice for municipal tax/provincial tax in the name of my sole proprietor (nor in my name). That is why I am confused. But have you been doing this for a long time? If you are enabled as a self-employed person on 1 January of a year, you will receive an yearly invoice from the city and the province. But perhaps there are cities/provinces where this is not the case. In Antwerp, at least, it is.

I have been working for two years. I see that my municipal tax is always stated in my tax assessment, but I have never received separate invoices. Perhaps they are still to come. In any case, thank you for your help.
