Missing tax return and penalty

Question

If you forget to do a return for a period without income and expenses, can you be fined for ‘missing return’?

After 12 years, I made one mistake in my tax return and was immediately fined £100.

No compassion, just pay up.

They are very strict about that. That's just how it is in VAT legislation. There's nothing you can do about it. As a subject to VAT, you are simply obliged to do a return every month (or quarter), even if it is empty. The vAT administration simply does what it has to do according to the legislation drawn up by politicians. They cannot waive fines either (except if they are less than €5.00, in which case they are waived because the costs of collecting them for the administration are greater than the proceeds, but that is also included in the legislation. It is therefore unjustified to unjustly revile and reproach civil servants. If they know this, you can also be prosecuted for it.
