I am new here in this whole system. I am self-employed in secondary occupation and therefore exempted from VAT.
What I didn’t know is that I don’t actually have to (am not allowed to) enter my vAT number when I order something. Before I knew this, I had already done so. I subsequently asked the company if they could still change this. Unfortunately, they told me that they could no longer do so. What should I do now?

For foreign purchases, it is better not to provide your vAT number.
But for purchases from Belgian companies, it doesn't matter.
Are you referring to foreign purchases?
It was indeed foreign within the EU.
As a VAT-exempted person, it is indeed better to buy as a private person (i.e. do not provide a company number).
Then that foreign company will immediately invoice you at their local vAT rate and it will be fine for your accounts.Given that they (the foreign suppliers) have invoiced you as a VAT-exempt entrepreneur with reverse-charged VAT, you must now submit a special vAT declaration. It's not that you've made a mistake, don't worry ;)

You really should try it out for yourself. Even if you don’t have a company number yet, you can already go ahead.
