Using a private car for secondary employment

Question

I use my own (private) van for my secondary occupation. I drive from home to the customer. I carry my work clothes and tools specifically in my van. I have not included my car in my business. As it is an old car, I do not intend to do so. Can I still claim my fuel costs (with fuel card and invoice) and what percentage of private/work use can I justify? I estimate 80% work transport and 20% private. Do I need to be able to substantiate this?

Hi BB,

That is certainly allowed, but as you indicate, you do need to be able to substantiate it. That is always the case, really. Dexxter itself suggests a percentage of 75% from light goods vehicles. That is a very safe percentage. If you can justify it, you can deviate from this and make it 80%, for example. During an audit, the tax authorities will at most say that you need to adjust or lower that percentage, so I think you can certainly try. Kind regards, Kürt
