Submit overnight stay as (partial) expense?

Question

Hello there!

I will soon have to work away from home and I need to be there quite early (on a Saturday). I was planning to leave on Friday evening and stay overnight, can this overnight stay be (partially) booked as an expense? If yes, under which category does this fall?

Thanks in advance!

Hello,

Giel from the Dexxter team here. This question was asked a while ago. If you search for 'hotel', you will find the answer! Hopefully that helps.

Giel, shouldn't you really create a standard category for this?

Just put 'travel expenses' or something like that in there as a fixed category. I think a lot of users would benefit from that. Anyone else here?

Hi Giel

Thanks for your answer. I could have searched the forum first, of course Now, as for the category etc., that's no problem for me, as I'm already familiar with creating categories myself. I question whether it's actually allowed to enter such an overnight stay as an expense, especially since it falls on the weekend. I've already been told that this is not allowed for restaurant costs, for example... Is that correct?

Regards,

Giel

Don't worry about the weekend! If you go to a restaurant at the weekend, it may be less likely that it was from business purposes... But it's not forbidden either; it's perfectly possible that you did go out for a business meal at the weekend.

The same goes for those overnight stays. Weekday, weekend... it doesn't matter, you just have to be able to prove that it was for professional reasons, the rest doesn't count!

Okay, thank you for your answer! For restaurant costs, I now know that I can claim 69% as an expense and deduct 0% vAT (Dexxter standard), but what about overnight stays?

Interesting topic, I'll jump in :)

My accountant never wanted to reclaim vAT on overnight stays, ever. No problem to claim as an expense (100% too), but she warned me that I had to be able to prove it via my diary in the event of a tax audit. But never vAT, that was her "rule". No idea if that's general, I'd love to hear from others.
