Hello,
Can I claim my Spotify subscription as an expense? Should I do so under the category ‘Software & computing costs’? And is it 100% deductible, or less, given that I also use the subscription in my free time?

Hello,

Hello Sophie,
You can certainly include it in your accounts, provided that you actually use Spotify while carrying out your self-employed activity. That way, Spotify can be included (in part) in your accounts. If you want a quick rule of thumb for the professional use %, you could base it on the number of days you are enabled in your self-employed activity. If that is two days a week, for example, you can estimate professional use at 2/7, or 28.5% (or round it up slightly :)). But it may also be the case that you only use Spotify when you are working on your self-employed activity, which would result in a much higher percentage of professional use.
In terms of category, you can place it anywhere, for example 'software & computing costs'. It doesn't really matter, as long as you apply the correct professional use percentage.
Because your question was so interesting, we have also turned the answer into an article. You can now find it in the learning center under the title: "Can you include Spotify, Apple Music, etc. in your accounts?"Thank you for your question. We hope it will help many other people with the same question :) Thanks in advance,
Murielle
Somewhere in Spotify (in your account) you will find a summary of your payments, which you can use to enter the expense.
Since Dexxter also accepts JPEG and PNG files, you can simply submit a screenshot of that proof of payment.
If you do this as an expense, does it have to come out of your business account?
Hi AL, it doesn't matter whether you pay with your business account or your private account. I try to do everything I enter with my business account as much as possible, but that's for my own summary.
By the way, I found a lot of information in the learning environment (I checked to make sure I was right ;) ). After just a few seconds, I found two interesting articles:

Sorry for bringing up this old question, but I came across the article about booking Spotify again.
I have now found the payment receipts from Spotify, but doesn't my vAT number have to be stated on the invoice in order to book it correctly?
No, not necessarily. If it's purely for expense purposes, you just need some kind of document from your supplier. Your vAT number doesn't have to be on it. That's allowed and may even be better to demonstrate professional use.But it's not necessary :)
One more question: I'm a professional musician and I always declare Spotify to be an expense because I also use it to discover trends, get to know music, study, and teach, ... or, like other users, as background music when doing my bookkeeping in Dexxter. I have claimed 100% of this in the past years, but now I am wondering whether this is credible and whether I should allow some margin for private use in case of an audit?
You really should try it out for yourself. Even if you don’t have a company number yet, you can already go ahead.
