Purchases of goods within the EU with a vAT number as exempted from VAT

Question

Hey!

I purchase trade goods in the EU for a webshop. These can only be purchased via a portal for retailers, here I had to provide my vAT number.

Now I’m wondering how to do this correctly, because I’m actually VAT exempted. I’ve heard that it’s better not to provide your vAT number and to purchase as a private person, but that’s not possible in this case because then I can’t make purchases on the platform.

Thanks in advance for the clarification!

Hey,

If you are VAT exempted, that means you simply have to pay VAT. You also do not have to charge VAT on your sales.

If you are subject to VAT, you do have to charge VAT, but you can also reclaim the VAT on your purchases.

As a VAT-exempt entrepreneur, the full purchase amount (incl. VAT) counts as an expense, since the VAT is an expense for you.

You are welcome to provide your VAT number; I do not see why you should not be allowed to do so. Many B2B sites only sell to individuals with a company number.
