After 12 years, I made one mistake in my tax return and was immediately fined £100.

They are very strict about that.That's just how it is in VAT legislation. There's nothing you can do about it. As a subject to VAT, you are simply obliged to do a return every month (or quarter), even if it is empty. The vAT administration simply does what it has to do according to the legislation drawn up by politicians. They cannot waive fines either (except if they are less than €5.00, in which case they are waived because the costs of collecting them for the administration are greater than the proceeds, but that is also included in the legislation. It is therefore unjustified to unjustly revile and reproach civil servants. If they know this, you can also be prosecuted for it.
You really should try it out for yourself. Even if you don’t have a company number yet, you can already go ahead.
