Flat-rate deduction for professional expenses when starting in September

Vraag

Hello everyone; I started as a solicitor in September. I’m keeping track of all my expenses nicely via dexxter, but I’ve now discovered that it might be smarter to just work with the flat-rate allowance of around 5000 euros, which is much more than the expenses I actually incur in 4 months.

My question is: is the flat rate reduced based on the amount of months you work? In other words, can I use the entire flat rate, even if I only work for four months? (Then I wouldn’t pay any taxes at all…)

No, no, the allowance is also applied pro rata. It would indeed be other very difficult to start towards the end of the year and then still do better than the allowance with actual costs. The fixed allowance is also capped at 30% of your income. So it is certainly not possible to pay no taxes.

Indeed, I had forgotten for a moment that it was a certain percentage of your income, with a maximum amount. @WS: if, after deducting the fixed allowance, I do not exceed the tax-free amount, I do indeed pay no taxes...

That's right, I had forgotten the draft of the tax-free allowance.

Nice to read, I was wondering the same question – I'm starting on 01/10, already trying out Dexxter. Thanks everyone for your contributions!

The tax-free allowance is for a whole year and not something that needs to be applied pro rata, right? ;)

The tax-free allowance is for a whole year. Silly example, but if you graduate and start working in September, you will get a lot back from your personal income tax, for example.

Pit will be deducted, but you have a tax-free allowance for the whole year. So almost your entire gross salary from September, October, November and December is covered by this. No pro rata with the tax-free allowance...
