I don't know about the 1000 m², but it's just the business area. So all the square metres for your self-employed activity, approximately! Don't turn it into a scientific project by measuring everything meticulously.
Maybe that's something specifically for Antwerp, or maybe I'm misunderstanding, but I received two tax calculations:
1: for provincial tax on companies: there is indeed a fixed amount below 1000 m².
2: Tax on establishments: the next amounts apply:
Establishments up to and including 50m²: 0 euro
Establishments from 51m²: minimum 200 euro (up to 150m²)
Given that my home is larger than 50m² but my office space is smaller, that does make a difference.
What JD says is absolutely correct. For the province, it is 1000m², but for business premises tax, it is (unfortunately) much smaller. It's about the business premises, i.e. the space occupied by the company. If your office space (and everything else you need for your profession) is smaller than 50m², you don't have to pay anything.
My ex-accountant will shoot me if this isn't correct, but I've always declared it this way with his approval.
You really should try it out for yourself. Even if you don’t have a company number yet, you can already go ahead.
