Calculating VAT: how does it work in Belgium?

Calculating from VAT-exclusive to VAT-incl.

100 euros excl. VAT become 121 euros incl. VAT. We take our 100 euros excl. VAT and do 1.21 to arrive at 121 euros incl. VAT.

100 euros excl. VAT becomes 112 euros incl. VAT. We take our 100 euros excl. VAT and do 1.12 to arrive at 112 euros incl. VAT.

100 euros excl. VAT becomes 106 euros incl. VAT. We take our 100 euros excl. VAT and do 1.06 to arrive at 106 euros incl. VAT.

Calculating from including VAT to excluding VAT

121 euros including 21% VAT becomes 100 euros excl. VAT. We take our 121 euros incl. VAT and divide by 1.21 to arrive at 100 euros excl. VAT.

112 euros incl. VAT becomes 100 euros excl. VAT. We take our 112 euros incl. VAT and divide by 1.12 to arrive at 100 euros excl. VAT.

106 euros incl. VAT becomes 100 euros excl. VAT. We take our 106 euros incl. VAT and divide by 1.06 to arrive at 100 euros excl. VAT.

Why specifically for Belgium?

Because the VAT rates for Belgium are unique, so make no mistake and use our calculator where you can only select the Belgian VAT percentages.

You will, for example, also find a Dutch calculator, but be careful because the Netherlands has a VAT rate of 9% for some products and services. We do not have that VAT rate here in Belgium.

In Belgium, we have four VAT percentages: 0%, 6%, 12% and 21%. The product you sell or the services you provide as a self-employed person determines which VAT rate you must apply to your sales.

Who your customer is (a private person or a company), whether or not your customer is subject to VAT, and what activity your customer is engaged in makes no difference whatsoever to you as a VAT-registered business. You must charge your VAT rate according to the activity you are engaged in.

You will see, for example, that the sale of food is often subject to 6% VAT in Belgium, whereas your daily newspaper is subject to 0% VAT and most luxury goods are subject to a VAT rate of 21%.
