Entering expenses from your partner’s name

Question

Hello

Can I claim (part of) the costs for electricity, heating, internet, etc. as expenses? What if these subscriptions are mainly from my partner’s name? (we are married)? Can I claim these costs with the bills in his name, or do I have to transfer all these subscriptions to my name in order to claim them as expenses?

For electricity & gas, what if there is a credit balance at the end of the year and a refund is due? How should this be handled in the accounts?

I assume you submit these expenses every month or once a year?

Kind regards,
Annelies

  • If you want to claim the expense, it's no problem that it's in both your names.

If you want to reclaim vAT, that's a problem, as it's not allowed (it has to be in your vAT number and therefore only in your name).

End-of-year refund -> easy, just enter it under expenses and tick the credit note box. Same entry flow as for normal expenses.

  • I enter it every month, but that's for the summary. That way I know immediately how much the costs are, how much profit...

    Regards, Tim

Thanks for your answer. The monthly bills state that the monthly bills are entirely in my partner's name. So does this mean that if I want to enter this as an expense, I need to have all bills for subscriptions or utilities updated to include my name?

    Kind regards

For expenses, I would even dare to say that it can also be in the partner's name. As long as you have proof that you paid for it. Through a joint account, for example. In the article https://dexxter.be/beroepskosten-voor-je-sole proprietor/, I found the following:

For example, did you pay your telecom subscription via a joint bank account and are you then going to include that invoice in your accounts? That is possible as a professional expense. This may be useful for other people who have questions here.
