training to start as a secondary occupation

Question

Hey,

I took a course to become a yoga teacher in 2021 and 2022. Previously, I was employed as an employee in a completely other sector.

I only started my secondary occupation in 2023. Can I still claim the costs from this training as expenses? Is there also a possibility to write off these costs over 2 or 3 years? Is there anything at all possible with this considerable expense? 🙂

Many thanks for your advice.

I would include it in your expenses, especially if it was a significant amount of money. You couldn't have taught yoga without that training, so it seems crucial to me.

I think it's okay for the costs, but it will be more difficult for the vAT. But the cost itself is probably important.

And then you could possibly book the investment in 2023 and then depreciate it over 3 years, for example. Yes, that seems fine to me.

Dear,

Additional question for dexxter: so you can depreciate a training course over several years?I only started my main occupation in July, but I am currently following a training course that comes with a hefty price tag... given that my income is lower than my expenses for 2023, I will have a negative taxable base this year. If I can depreciate that training course over several years, I can also enjoy a tax deduction in next years. Is this possible?

Kind regards and thanks for the advice!

Just to be sure, because you say "to Dexxter". I'm not from Dexxter, I'm just a Dexxter user like you :)

I would say that you can write off a course, yes...

Hey, I also wrote off my yoga training as an investment over three years. I took the course in 2022 and started my own business in 2023. It's a bit dubious and the legislation is not 100% clear on this, but in principle it should be possible.

Hello everyone, I have a similar question: I took a course in the autumn of 2023 and started a secondary occupation in January 2025. I see that this topic is from two years ago: is it acceptable to do this?
Thanks in advance for your feedback!
