Your Checklist for Closing the 2025 Financial Year

Dec 16, 2025
checklist afsluit boekjaar

A new year means a new financial year for self-employed individuals (sole proprietors). With this checklist, you can close the year 2025 in Dexxter without worries and start 2026 smoothly.

1. Booking Missing Expenses

Are all your professional expenses from 2025 included in your accounting? Check your unprocessed expenses and work through that list for a complete and up-to-date overview.

👉 Need extra inspiration? Check out our list of deductible costs in the learning centre.

2. Checking Social Contributions

When your file is complete, the ‘Social Contributions’ module shows you how much you have already paid and how much you may still need to pay based on your profit.

Important: Social contributions count in the year you pay them. An extra payment in December can therefore reduce your personal income tax and your social contributions.

Do you still need to make a large additional payment? Then an extra payment in 2025 might be fiscally advantageous. More information can be found in the learning centre.

3. Personal Income Tax

In Dexxter, go to ‘Settings’ → ‘Calculations’ and ensure that your salary as an employee (if applicable) is correctly filled in.

Afterwards, under ‘Reports’ → ‘Overview’, you can see approximately how much personal income tax you should set aside for your self-employed activity.

Is that amount increasing? Then you can make an advance payment. You can find everything about this in the module ‘Personal Income Tax’ → ‘Advance Payments’ or in the learning centre.

4. Counting Your Inventory (Stock)

Do you still have unsold commercial goods on December 31, 2025? Their purchase value forms your inventory (stock). You enter this in Dexxter via ‘Personal Income Tax’ → ‘Inventory’. More explanation can be found in the learning centre.

5. Copyrights Are Taxed in the Year of Payment

Income from copyrights is fiscally allocated to the year in which your sales invoice is paid. Did you create a sales invoice with copyrights in 2025, but it has not yet been paid by 31/12/2025? Be careful, as you must then carry this sales invoice over to 2026.

Open the unpaid sales invoice with copyrights, click on ‘Actions’ in the top right, and select ‘Edit’. In step 2 during editing, remove the checkmark next to ‘Book document on this date’, and set the fiscal date to 01/01/2026.

6. Do You Have to Officially Close Your Financial Year?

Good news: no!

At the end of the year, you don’t actually have to do anything special; you do not have to close the accounting records.

You can create a new year in the top right of Dexxter to start 2026. You don’t have to specially report anything, and even in January, you can still perfectly consult and edit your accounting from the previous year where necessary.

Only when you submit a VAT return, client listing, or personal income tax return are your figures definitively fixed. Until then, you can still make corrections.
