Student accommodation as an expense?

BS
24/06/2022
Question

I moved into student accommodation last semester so that I could write my thesis on campus. Technically, this would fall under education, so could I claim it as an expense? Or would the tax authorities do too much about it? Or at a reduced percentage, e.g. 40%?

What would you do?

I don't think that would be allowed, or only for a very small part. It would seem unfair to me if a student were allowed to do that for 40% or so.

As a secondary occupation, I used to be allowed to claim only 25% of my housing costs :/</

Are you no longer a secondary occupation holder, ZB? Have you become a main occupation? Or have you stopped?

40% seems like a lot to me anyway... Read the article in the learning center, the title is something like 'professional percentage'. They talk about the amount of square metres per profession.

If you can get to 40% that way, then it might be possible, but I don't think so?

I'm over 25 and Acerta automatically changed my status to main occupation since my birthday, so my status as a self-employed student has expired and yes, you can deduct office expenses etc., but I was wondering if a student room would fall under education. I don't think I'm going to risk it :D

Well, I would risk it to include part of your student accommodation, but not 40%. 25% for professional purposes, for example, seems fair to me.But I wouldn't declare it as 'education', but as 'rent'. That's where you live, and if you also practise your profession there, that's reason enough to declare part of that rent.

(If your landlord from your rental agrees, of course, so check first ;) )

Be sure to contact your landlord, because for him this falls under professional rental, which is very disadvantageous for him. So you can't just do it.

I pay myself a monthly lump sum expense allowance, here is a lump sum for my home office. Perhaps this could be an elegant solution for you too? This is currently €140.15 per month for the home office. Just Google it.
