Collaboration between two sole proprietors

I am planning to start a joint project with a colleague (who also has his own sole proprietor) and have my own sole proprietor. Is it possible for the project to run through my sole proprietor, and for me to divide the costs and revenues by invoicing my colleague’s sole proprietor? Is this acceptable in a sole proprietor, or do we need to set up a general partnership for this type of project?
