Depreciation date for starting a sole proprietor or on the start date

WP
16/08/2024
Question

Dear all, I started as a sole proprietor in June. I have heard that in a sole proprietor, you can depreciate costs over the entire year and not just on the date of purchases. For example, for purchases made in September, you can start depreciation on 1/1/2024. Can you also use that date at the beginning of the year if the sole proprietor had not yet been started, or do I have to make the start of depreciation coincide with the start of the sole proprietor? Thank you in advance for your clarification.

Hello,

If you started your business in 2024 and you made an investment of, for example, EUR 1,000 that you have to depreciate over 5 years, you can indeed claim EUR 200 in expenses in 2024. Regardless of whether you made that expenditure in January, February, March, ... August or October, ...

If you are referring to an expenditure you made in 2023, i.e. before you actually started your business (so-called start-up costs), then you could indeed link it to your start date. You would then exceptional include that cost from 2023 in 2024. Best regards, Your Dexxter Expert
